How to Do a File Manicure at Home: Step-by-Step Guide
In recent years, more and more women have been choosing file manicure, opting out of more aggressive techniques that use electric drills or cutting tools. This method is valued for its delicacy, safety, and natural-looking results. The cuticle is carefully treated without being injured, becomes more well-groomed, grows more slowly, maintains its elasticity, and does not form hangnails.

Although salon procedures can be quite expensive, there is good news: the file technique is easy to learn and can be applied at home. It is enough to follow five basic rules to provide gentle cuticle care and achieve a clean, neat result that is no less professional than a salon manicure.

Preparation

First of all, choosing the right nail file is a key step that directly determines the outcome of the entire procedure. The optimal option is a “banana” or “half-moon” shaped file: thanks to its curved design, it allows precise, accurate, and максимально comfortable work in the area around the nail.
It is recommended to choose a soft and flexible file with a 240 grit abrasive level — such a tool gently shapes the nail without damaging the natural nail plate. Too harsh, dense, or straight files with a grit level below 220 are not suitable for this type of manicure, as they can damage the nail structure and negatively affect the final result.

Step One

Start your manicure with one of the most important stages — carefully preparing the cuticles. Perform the procedure gently and with maximum precision, using an orange stick. Softly push back the cuticles to create a clean, even outline of the nail plate and achieve a neat, well-groomed result. This approach helps make the manicure look more professional and gives the hands a flawless, aesthetic appearance.

Step Two

Using the rounded side of a “banana” file, gently work on the sidewalls of each finger. Carefully remove rough skin areas without applying excessive pressure to maintain comfort and safety during the procedure. This method will help give the skin a smooth, well-groomed look and make the manicure more precise and complete.

Step Three

Return to the cuticles. Place the file on the cuticle area, using the narrow edge or corner of the tool, and gently treat the area with light, careful movements, as if softly pushing the cuticle back. Work methodically and attentively, paying attention to each nail. This approach will help achieve a perfectly smooth, neat, and well-groomed result.

Step Four

To finish the procedure, you can add extra shine to your nails using a buffing file. This gentle step carefully evens out the surface, smooths minor imperfections, and refines the texture, making it more even and polished. Thanks to this delicate buffing, the nails take on a well-groomed, healthy, and neat appearance—as if a layer of clear top coat has been applied.
After this treatment, the nails look flawless even without polish, reflecting a natural shine, cleanliness, and elegance.
